2008-2009 7th Grade Lincoln Hall Art Curriculum Overview
Most projects students will vary from quarter to quarter based on what is most appropriate for a particular class. However, every class will work in both 2-D and 3-D media. Remember, all projects will be given back to students at the end of the quarter, except for a few that will be kept for additional displays such as the annual Village Hall Art Show. We will also spend a little time reviewing the knowledge and concepts that will be tested during state mandated testing this year. Yes, there are state learning outcomes for Art!
2 DIMENSIONAL -
Right Brain/Left Brain - Through Betty Edwards’ book, entitled Drawing on the Artist Within, students will practice an upside down drawing activity designed to get them to move to the right side of their brain while doing observational drawings.
Pop Art Plant - Students draw a still life drawing of a plant, which will then be finished with color inspired by the Pop Artists of the 1960’s. We will look at Andy Warhol (famous for his “soup can” paintings in the 1960’s) specifically to learn about the art and times when he became famous.
Magazine Face - Students cut a face from a magazine in half vertically and then re-create the faces features and match the colors in this project.
Impressionism Painting- Students study Impressionism, and create a poster with a partner of a well-known Impressionistic artist. Artists such as Van Gogh and Cassatt will be researched, and the poster presents the pertinent facts of their life. Students will create a painting based on their own Impressionist artist. Students will use acrylic paint and canvas board to try their hand at this well-known art style.
Commercial Art - Students learn about the difference between Fine Art and Commercial Art - and what some of the most common commercial art jobs are. Depending on the quarter, students create a program cover for the annual multi-cultural concert, create a design for the Village of Lincolnwood Vehicle registration sticker, or create artwork for the school calendar or other school related events.
Paper Mosaic - Students will learn about the Islamic tradition of mosaics, and create a design with radial symmetry. Using their knowledge of color, they will finish the mosaic using analogous and complimentary colors to create an attractive design.
3 DIMENSIONAL -
Ceramics – Students will learn about the coil and slab method of building with clay, and design and build a functional ceramic container. This could be a mug, bowl, vase, jewelry box, candle holder, etc… They may receive a homework sheet with some ceramic terms they need to know (some of which I have defined in class), and ceramic history questions. After finishing the green ware (un fired) portion of the ceramic project, students will learn about glazing and finish these containers that may be used for food and drink with food safe glazes, after which the projects will be fired and then displayed.
