Compounds to Elements

Unit: Compounds to Elements

Time to  REVIEW!  Test Coming on Wed. Mar. 19th!

Check your notes (RTNs)  from the Matter book ( blue book) – Chapters 3 & 5

There are few websites that have good slideshows to help you learn, and review for, this unit.  The Jefferson National Laboratory has a bunch of good learning tools. ( Your parents, the U.S. taxpayers have paid for these programs!)  There are slideshows and games. Check it out!

The general site can be accessed here:

Compounds, Mixtures, and Elements

(information similar to our Chapter 3 in the Matter book)

Elements

A review of the Periodic Table is here:

http://education.jlab.org/jsat/powerpoint/0708_periodic_table.ppt#256,1,Introduction to the Periodic Table

The slide program used in our class for the “Tour of the Periodic table” is this:

http://education.jlab.org/jsat/powerpoint/periodic_table.ppt#256,1,Periodic Table of Elements

The slides #1 – 35 are a nice review of the Periodic Table. It could help you prepare for the upcoming test.

In class, I started with slide 36 in the PowerPoint show, which is about half-way through it.   At that point it is about the Groups (or Families –which are the vertical columns) of the Periodic Table.  [To get to Slide # 36 in the slideshow, you can scroll down the side bar on the right side of the screen. ]

In class we are using this slideshow to learn about each of the Groups.

You will learn:

-          some common characteristics of the elements in each Group.

-          The names of some of the elements

-          The valence electron structure (number of electrons in the outer shell)
