Reading and Skills - This week we are reading "Homeless" by Anna Quindlen and are writing essay responses.  We are also viewing "James and the Giant Peach" as a wrap up to our play project!

Reading/Skills - Writing October 29-November 2

Reading and Skills -This week we are finishing our independent reading presentations and reading the short story "The Crush," by Cynthia Rylant. While reading, we will continue to work with the questioning strategy.

10/31 - 7th GRADE DAY OF THE DEAD. (8th graders will work on alternative material while 7th graders enjoy the special program.) Hmwk: Read 30 minutes

Writing - This week, we will continue to learn about the writing trait called ORGANIZATION and we will write one interesting short story exemplifying good organization. We will also finish our grammar unit on Capitalization.

10/29 - Hmwk: Study for Capitalization TEST on Tues, Study for Vocab Unit 2 TEST retakes Tues, "Very Bad Day" paper due on Thurs.

10/15 - 10/19 Reading/Skills-LA

Reading and Skills - This week we are continuing to read the short story called "The Monkey's Paw," by W.W. Jacobs, which is filled with foreshadowed events. Students are enjoying identifying these events and using them to predict the outcome of this suspenseful story. Each student should continue to read their independent reading books and should be finished by 10/19.

10/19 - SHORT STORY PLAY FIELD TRIP (7th grade students have a special field trip and 8th graders will have a chance to work on homework during class.)

Reading and Skills - This week we are reading the short story called "The Monkey's Paw," by W.W. Jacobs, which is filled with foreshadowed events. We are working on identifying these events as we read.

Language Arts - We will be continuing our Capitalization Unit, working on our Vocabulary Unit 2 work, and beginning our 6 Traits of Writing curriculum.

10/9 - HMWK: Vocab Unit 2-Highlight words and complete sentences.

10/10 - HMWK: Vocab Unit 2-notecards. Rewrite "Horses" so that it will receive a 5 or a 6 on the IDEAS rubric.

10/11 - HMWK: Vocab Unit 2- Section 2. Capitalizationn Packet pp. 110/111.

9/24- Rdg/LA and Skills

Reading and Skills - This week we are reading the ironic short story called "The Necklace,"  working on the questioning reading strategy and continuing to record our thoughts using a narrative plot outline.

   9/24 - Hmwk: Read 30 minutes

   9/25 - Hmwk: Read 30 minutes.  "The Necklace" question sheet. 

   9/26 - Hmwk: Read 30 minutes.  "The Necklace" narrative plotline.  "The Necklace" letter project due on 10/3.

   9/27 - Hmwk: Read 30 minutes.

   9/28 - EXPERIENCIA DAY (7th grade students have a special schedule and 8th graders will have a chance to work on homework.)

Language Arts - We will be finishing our Punctuation Unit, getting our new Vocabulary books, and beginning our 6 Traits of Writing curriculum.

   9/24 -  Study for Punctuation TEST.  Complete Vocabulary Notecards for the first 1/2 of words.

   9/25 - Complete Vocab Notecards for second half of words.

Summer Reading

Hello everyone:

I hope you all have a wonderful summer filled with family, fun, reading and recreation.  

Keep in mind that each student should be reading each day!  You should read anything and everything for your enjoyment.  Here are some suggestions for great books.

   James and the Giant Peach - by Roald Dahl 
   Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - by Robert C. O'Brien

   Becoming Naomi Leon - by Pam Munoz Ryan
   

In addition, 6th grade and 7th grade have special requirements for reading, since these books will be discussed during the first few weeks of school.  Start at the beginning of the summer, so you have time!
