MIDDLE AGESDear Parents,
This month in social studies we have been studying the Middle Ages. Students have been working on a variety of activities and simulated events dealing with this time period.
To culminate our unit, we will be having a Medieval Day. We will be simulating a Medieval fair, and students will be participating in Medieval games on Friday, June 5th. This fair will include the tournament of knights, court cases, and entertainment, which will be performed by the students.
We will be offering a lunch that day from East of Edens. It will include chicken, potatoes, salad, and a beverage. In addition, we will be providing a snack during the fair and afternoon activities. To help with the cost of the snack and the lunch, we are asking for each child to bring $3.
We are hoping that all the children can participate in this fun and educational experience. For students to participate they may not receive a disciplinary referral from May 22nd to June 5th. In addition, students may need to earn a passing grade in social studies.
If you have any questions regarding the Medieval Day, you can email or call Mr. Salski or Mr. DuPriest. Thank you.
Sincerely,
6th Grade Team

6th Grade Curriculum Overview
Your child's academic classes include reading, language arts, math, science, skills, and social studies. Additionally, your child will attend a physical education and expressive arts class (music, art, technology education, or home economics) each day. Depending on your child's schedule, he/she will have three to five academic teachers.
In reading/language arts, the focus will be on improving reading and writing skills. The reading material used is McDougal Littell's The Language of Literature and assorted novels. The language arts material used is McDougal Littell's The Writer's Craft for grammar and Sadlier-Oxford's Vocabulary Workshop for spelling and vocabulary. Students will complete a research project and learn to write persuasive, narrative, and expository essays.
The sixth grade math program concentrates on applying the math skills your child has been learning up to this point for use in problem solving situations. The series used is the Connected Mathematics Program. Students will work on number theory, fractions, decimals, percent, geometry, and statistics. In addition to daily homework assignments, they will develop unit projects and presentations.
Earth science is the focus of the sixth grade science curriculum. The units that are covered include earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, rocks and minerals, geologic time, and astronomy.
The social studies program examines ancient world cultures. Students will study political science, economics, history, geography, and social systems. The textbook in sixth grade is The Ancient World. Students will learn about the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Near East, Greece, Rome, China, and the Middle Ages of Europe. They will do various hands-on activities and simulations applying concepts taught about each civilization. In addition, students will participate in a mini-classroom economy where they will simulate real world experiences such as finding and working a job, depositing money, and paying bills.
The skills program is designed to provide your child with academic and personal strategies that will lead to a successful sixth grade experience. Topics such as organization, time management, studying and test-taking techniques, listening, speaking, reading strategies, and health will be covered. Additionally, your child will be taught the Peaceable Schools Program and complete the D.A.R.E. curriculum.
